Expedition Yellowstone 2019
March 21 – March 26
For Adventurous Learners
THE WHEATLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL
Wheatland Middle school was again lucky enough to be selected for a winter expedition to Yellowstone National Park through the state park lottery system. This will be the fourth expedition offered to WMS students. The students will have many educational roadside stops including finding gypsum crystals in the remains of a petrified forest along I-25, a tour of the Little Big Horn Battle Field and the Yellowstone Gateway Museum.
Students are placed in clans when they arrive at the YCC camp at Mammoth. The clans are responsible for all the cooking and daily preparation at the camp. Students are outdoors the majority of the day hiking or on snowshoes depending on conditions. Park rangers guide all of the student learning on topics of biology, geology and environmental science. Their time in Yellowstone concludes around the campfire, with each clan sharing a legend they create about a unique feature of Yellowstone National Park.
If weather permits, students will tour the Blue Water Fish Hatchery and tour the Thermopolis Dinosaur Museum on the return trip back to Wheatland. The cost per student is $350 and is limited to the first 24 students that apply and pay for the trip at the Wheatland Middle School office. If you are interested in sponsoring a student please let the office know and the funds can be applied to a specific student or on a need basis.
